The Assam archer Mainaw Nazary completed her last appearance

BANGALORE: Mainaw Nazary completed her last appearance in the sub-junior section on a high note. The Assam archer, who will graduate to the junior level next season onwards, reaped a rich haul of three medals on the second day of the 33rdSub-Junior National Archery Championships at the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Thursday.

Monisha V Shankar gave the Karnataka camp some reason to cheer as she second finished behind Mainaw, settling for 60m silver and take the state's medal tally to two. SP Thanusha gave Karnataka the first medal when she won the 30m Indian round bronze on Wednesday.

Mainaw, 17, launched her campaign snatching the 60m recurve gold before winning the 50m silver. She finished the day winning the 40m gold as Assam dominated the day, claiming five medals on Thursday.

The junior archer proved her potential in 2011 when she teamed up with Binod Swansi to win the bronze medal in the cadet recurve mixed team event of the World Youth Championship at Legnica, Poland. She followed it up with another brilliant feat in Asian Youth Archery Championship in Dhaka where she won the individual recurve bronze and paired up with Himane Boro for team gold.

In the 70m recurve round, Mainaw fired 321 points. Monisha had to battle it out with Khoshelu Sakhamo of Nagaland for the silver medal. After the duo were tied for 305 points each, it was the Karnataka archer who prevailed in the tie-shoot, firing more accurate shots at target X, scoring 9 against her opponent's 7.

"This is my last appearance and I am happy to have completed with medals here," said Mainaw.

Meanwhile an elated Monisha, who has moved to the recurve this season round after wining the gold in the Indian round last year, said: "I am delighted with my performance here. All my hard work at the preparatory camp under coach Brijesh has paid off," she said. Before picking up the bow and arrow, Monish tried her hand at rowing. She was adjudged the Youngest Rower in the 2007 Nationals in Hyderabad.
